The good news: Drinking coffee every day reduces the risk of death!
One decade-long study produced surprising results linking high coffee consumption with a lower risk of death.
The increased longevity is found even among those who drink 6 drinks a day and those who drink coffee without caffeine.
According to Medical Daily, the study was published in the Journal of Internal Medicine JAMA on July 2.
Nearly half a million British adults (aged 38 to 73) were studied over a 10-year period. During that time, 14,225 participants died from a variety of causes, including cancer and heart disease, and drinking coffee every day had a 16% lower risk of death. This dropped slightly to 14% for those with 8 or more drinks per day.
"We found that those who drank 2-3 drinks a day had a 12% lower risk of death than those who did not drink coffee," study author Erikka Loftfield, research fellow at the National Cancer Institute, said.
The type of coffee and the amount consumed doesn't seem to make a difference - whether it's caffeine or decaffeinated (without caffeine), it's all associated with a lower risk of death.
Caffeine may not be the reason for the increased longevity as it is also the result of decaffeinated coffee consumers. Previously, research has suggested that substances coffee can improve health by reducing inflammation,
"Certain antioxidant-rich, polyphenol-rich compounds found in coffee may play an important role in improving health," said Christopher Gardner of the Stanford Prevention Research Center.
While coffee itself is safe, keep in mind that using too much cream, sugar, and added sweeteners in coffee can be unhealthy in the long run. Furthermore, it is also recommended not to drink two cups of coffee a day for vulnerable people like pregnant women.
